Tunes for Tanzania

On Saturday, March 7, 2015 about 75 people attended our 2nd Annual Tunes for Tanzania concert at Paulin Memorial Church in Windsor.  Some of last year’s performers including Lillian Scheirich from the WSO and University of Windsor Music faculty, students and alumni were so moved by the efforts of CWEF TZ that they willingly agreed to appear again but the program  also featured the talents of other local musicians – the Majestic Brass, Daniela Marentette, and our children performers Will Ebere , Emma McDonald and Fiona Carmichael.   The post- concert Taste of Tanzania reception was quite authentic this year with Tanzanians from the Windsor community donating various dishes.  The concert raised over $2000 which will be used to enroll Anjela in Sangiti Secondary School.

Tonight’s 4 Tanzania (T4T) 2014

The 2nd Annual Tonight’s for Tanzania  was held on September 27, 2014 at The Bronson Community Centre in Ottawa.  It was a wonderful social, cultural and networking event attended by over 125 people.  The event raised close to $3000 in support of CWEF TZ’s education program.  The money was used to enroll a new student in school as well as pay the 2015 school fees for the two Maasai students  at Natiro Secondary School sponsored through general funds.

From K-Dub to Africa

This was a ‘pass the hat’ performance  by Alysha Brilla with special guests Jsun, Oranmiyan, and Germina at Imbibe Food/Drink in Kitchener, ON.  A total of $745 was collected….it was a big hat!

Toss 4 Tanzania Handball Tournament!

While only a handful of people turned out for this event at the Goodlife Fitness Toronto Bell Trinity Centre on July 26, 2014 through the efforts of CWEF TZ supporters Angela Richards and Damien Wilmot  soliciting donations from clients and friends at Goodlife Fitness, over $800 was  collected.  All of the proceeds went towards the SASCO Cup Youth Sports Olympiad in Kiroka, TZ.

A Brillion Dollar Valentine’s Show, February 12, 2014 at The Painted Lady, Toronto, ON

Awesome music and supporting CWEF TZ combined on February 12th at A Brillion Dollar Valentine’s Show in Toronto featuring 2014 Juno nominee Alysha Brilla and the Brillion Dollar Band!  A portion ($2) of the cover charge was donated to CWEF TZ for anyone wearing pink.  A brilla-ent idea!

Tunes for Tanzania

On January 25, 2014, over 60 people braved the cold, snowy Windsor weather to attend our 1st Annual Tunes for Tanzania fundraising event held at Paulin Memorial Church.  The concert whose theme was “Celebrating Communities’, brought together an array or musical talents from a broad spectrum – the Windsor Symphony Orchestra community with a performance by Lillian Scheirich, the University’s School of Music (Faculty, Percussion Studio, and Alumni …including Julie!), the Director of the Downtown Music Initiative and the Director of Music Moves Kids Choir from Leamington.  Due to the weather, choir was unable to travel from Leamington to perform but  Erin Armstrong and Christine Turingia used their choir directing skills to teach the audience to sing the Jambo song!  A big hit with the audience.  Emceed by Peter Hrastovec Tunes for Tanzania was an exceptional evening of music that raised over $1600.  The aim of the concert was to raise enough funds to be able to send Neema, a 17 year old Maasai girl who in her own words, “I want to learn to read but my father wants me to marry.”  Mission accomplished thanks to the kind-heartedness of the Windsor community.

Grassroot Soccer Tournament

CWEF TZ was proud to be a recipient of the funds raised from the Grassroot Soccer Tournament held on January 12, 2013 at the University of Toronto Athletic Centre. The funds raised will allow vulnerable children in Tanzania to reap the benefits of organized sports through the donation of sports equipment to resource-poor schools in rural Tanzania.

Tonight’s for Tanzania (T4T) 2013

On Saturday, October 26, 2013, our CWEF TZ cultural development and liaison officer, Petronila Michael, and her incredible team organized a fun-filled evening of amazing performances, presentations, high fashion and delicious food that really brought Tanzania to Ottawa!  Asanteni sana to more than 100 big-hearted friends of Tanzania who participated in the event, donated money, or purchased something at the silent auction. Held at Carleton University, Tonight’s for Tanzania was a resounding success, raising $2160.  The money will be used to sponsor one of the children seeking education sponsorship at Trinity English Medium School in Boma Ng’ombe for several years.

Housewarming for Harvest Fundraiser

On Saturday, August 24, 2013 CWEF TZ members Julie Caron and Aaron Miller hosted a Housewarming for Harvest party where attendees partook of Tanzanian food, drinks and a Jeopardy game challenge. More than $360 was raised in support the 2013 CWEF TZ/SASCO agriculture project.

Table Tennis for Tanzania

This event was held at SPiN Galactic ping pong hall, downtown Toronto on March 3rd, 2013. We had a great turnout and lots of great fun! Our very own Rick and Tahsin were the champions of this year’s tourney!

University of Toronto Earth Tones Benefit Concert

CWEF TZ was selected to be one of the recipient charities of the 2012 Earth Tones Benefit Concert!! We were really excited about this opportunity and saw a great turn out at Convocation Hall on December 1st 2012 (University of Toronto, 31 Kings College Circle, Toronto, ON)! Earth Tones is an annual benefit concert run by the medical students at the University of Toronto with a mandate of increasing awareness of and supporting international children’s health initiatives by raising funds for established charities devoted to the cause. Earth Tones is affiliated with both the Medical Society and the University of Toronto International Health Program (UTIHP).

A Taste of Tanzania

This event was held in Windsor, ON on October 21, 2012, from 1-4 pm in the home of Rick and Wendy.  People who attended were given the opportunity to taste Tanzanian cuisine (pilau, ugali, mboga, maharnage, TZ-style BBQ, chipati), listen to Tanzanian music, purchase beautiful Tanzanian wares (khanga, kitange, Maasai shuka) and to talk to Julie and Aaron about their summer adventures in Tanzania.  The focus of the event was to raise enough money so that Eva, a 17 year old Maasai girl whose father was insisting she leave school to marry, would be able to continue her secondary school education.  It was a great event with a great outcome; about 42 people attended and over $2000 raised.  Since only $1500 was needed to sponsor Eva through 2013, the remainder of the proceeds will be used to support other CWEF TZ initiatives and the Rotary Club of Windsor (1918) Tanzania Project.

Donation of Sports Equipment to Asangha Primary School

CWEF Tanzania chair Julie Caron and SASCO Director Timothy Massawe each contributed funds and presented a large box of sports equipment to the Head Teacher at Asagha Primary School on August 26, 2012 on behalf of both organizations. There are very limited facilities at this school and a large number of children studying here. Although physical education and training is a part of the Tanzanian curriculum there was no equipment at this school. The children were so happy to receive the sports equipment to be used during phys ed and at recesses! This presentation was just the beginning of a larger SASCO initiative to provide sports equipment to schools in need.

Soirée for Sustainability

This event took place on February 11, 2012 at the Office Pub in Toronto, ON. The focus of this event was to raise money in support of an agriculture and farming sustainability project which would provide a supply of nutritious food, meat and eggs to the girls  receiving education sponsorship through CWEF TZ. In addition to delicious appetizers and free beer for those arriving in the first half an hour, this event included a fabulous art auction featuring donated works by Meaghan Elizabeth, Belinda Costa and many other talented artists.  The Art Auction added a fun and exciting component to the event; all pieces were sold. About 40 people attended and over $1000 was raised. Thanks to everyone who supported this event!

Meet and Greet Drinks Night

CWEF Tanzania held its first fundraising event, a Meet and Greet Drinks Night at Vermouth in Windsor, ON on November 1st 2011. The purpose of this event was to introduce CWEF TZ to the Windsor community and spread the word about our initiatives while enjoying delicious cocktails and chowing down on a plethora of appetizers. It was a huge success and through the generosity of the Windsor community enough money was raised so that the three girls under the care of SASCO treasurer Joyce Massawe who were without sponsors at that time would be able to attend Trinity English-Medium School for the year commencing January 2012.
